The Manson Family - Part 1

A look at the beginnings of the Manson family

Episode Show Notes

Before Charles Manson became one of the most notorious criminals in American history, he was a troubled child, a habitual offender, an aspiring musician, and a man who had spent more than half his life in correctional institutions.

In the first installment of our four-part series on Charles Manson and the Manson Family, we trace his journey from his birth in Cincinnati in 1934 through his troubled childhood, years in reform schools, federal imprisonment, and eventual release into the emerging counterculture of San Francisco in 1967.

We examine Manson's early criminal career, his interest in music and methods of persuasion, and the relationships that brought Mary Brunner, Lynette Fromme, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and others into his growing circle of followers.

The episode follows the group's travels through California, its connections to Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson and record producer Terry Melcher, and its eventual settlement at Spahn Ranch, the former Western movie location outside Los Angeles.

Finally, we explore Manson's increasingly apocalyptic beliefs, his appropriation of the Beatles' White Album, and the transformation of an unconventional communal household into a group dominated by one man's fantasies of power, revolution, and racial conflict.

This is the story of how the Manson Family began, before the murders of 1969.

Charles Manson, Part Two: The Summer of Blood

By the summer of 1969, the Manson Family had become increasingly isolated, and its leader's apocalyptic predictions were growing more violent.

In Part Two, we examine the failed drug deal that led Manson to shoot Bernard Crowe, the murder of musician Gary Hinman, and the escalating tensions that preceded the Tate-LaBianca murders.

The Family had begun with promises of freedom, music, and communal living. By August 1969, some of its members were preparing to commit acts of extraordinary violence.
